How we choose products

1. Start from the spec sheet

We collect each product’s official specifications from the manufacturer: port list, data rates, Power Delivery wattage, display output modes and certifications. If a number can’t be confirmed from an official source, we leave it out rather than guess.

2. Check it against the standards

USB-C is a connector, not a speed. We check claims against USB 3.2/USB4, Thunderbolt, DisplayPort Alt Mode and USB Power Delivery rules, and we call out common traps: 4K at 30Hz vs 60Hz, shared bandwidth, MST limits on macOS, and cables that can’t carry more than 60W.

3. Match products to real setups

A great hub for a Windows laptop can be the wrong choice for a MacBook Air. We tag every product with the setups it suits and the ones it doesn’t, and we explain why.

4. Weigh value and track record

We favor brands with clear documentation, warranty support and a history of consistent quality, and we look for patterns in what owners commonly report. Price tier matters, but a cheap product that can’t do the job isn’t good value.

5. Keep it current

Guides are reviewed regularly. Discontinued products are replaced, and the “Updated” date on every guide tells you when it was last checked.

What we don’t claim

thisUSB is a research publication. Unless a guide explicitly says otherwise, we have not lab-tested the products we cover, and we never present spec-sheet research as hands-on results.
