Best headphones for wired USB-C audio
Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen, Black)2.5W charger · 1 port
- See on Amazon
If you have an iPhone, the earbuds to buy are Apple AirPods Pro 3. Their USB-C case also charges on MagSafe, Qi and Apple Watch chargers, and 5 minutes in the case gives about an hour of listening. If you switch between iPhone and Android, get the Sony WF-1000XM6: it has the same USB-C-plus-Qi case, and Sony's app runs on both platforms. To listen over a USB-C cable, get the Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) for phones and computers, or AirPods Max 2 for lossless audio on Apple devices.
Every pair here charges over USB-C. What differs is everything else the port and the case can do, so this guide starts there.

What USB-C actually does on earbuds and headphones
On earbuds, USB-C only charges. The port is on the case, and none of the five earbud picks plays audio through it. Music goes over Bluetooth, so sound quality depends on the codec your phone and the earbuds share: LDAC on Sony with Android, Samsung's SSC-UHQ on recent Galaxy phones, or AAC and SBC everywhere else.
On headphones, USB-C can carry digital audio. The headphones show up as a USB audio device, so no driver is needed. Bose's 2nd Gen QuietComfort Ultra takes 16-bit audio at 44.1 or 48kHz, which matches CD resolution, and Bose calls it lossless. AirPods Max 2 go further: 24-bit/48kHz lossless plus an ultra-low-latency mode, over the included cable only. Not every flagship headphone does this, so look for "USB audio" on the spec sheet, not just "USB-C".
Charging figures from each maker:
| Model | Quick charge | Battery, noise cancelling on | Wireless charging | Cable in the box |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sony WF-1000XM6 | 5 min = about 1 hr | 8 hrs, 24 with case | Qi | USB-A to USB-C |
| AirPods Pro 3 | 5 min = about 1 hr | 8 hrs, 24 with case | MagSafe, Qi, Apple Watch charger | None |
| Galaxy Buds4 Pro | Not stated | 6 hrs, 26 with case | Wireless pad, Wireless PowerShare | None |
| Pixel Buds Pro 2 | 5 min = up to 1.5 hrs (ANC off) | 8 hrs, 30 with case | Qi-certified | None listed |
| Bose QC Ultra (2nd Gen) | 15 min = up to 3 hrs | Up to 30 hrs | No | USB-C to USB-C, 3.5mm to 2.5mm |
| AirPods Max 2 | 5 min = about 1.5 hrs | Up to 20 hrs | No | USB-C to USB-C |
| AirPods 5 (Wireless) | 5 min = about 1 hr | 5 hrs, 22 with case | Qi, Apple Watch charger | None |
Three takeaways. Most earbuds now ship without a cable, so check you have a spare USB-C to USB-C cable. Wireless charging is an earbud feature; neither pair of headphones has it. And the headphones carry their own USB-C to USB-C cable because it doubles as the audio cable.
Best overall: Sony WF-1000XM6

Sony
Sony WF-1000XM6 Wireless Noise Canceling Earbuds (Black)
Sony's 2026 flagship noise-cancelling earbuds, with LDAC and LE Audio and a case that charges over USB-C or on a Qi pad.
- 2.5W charger
- 1 port
Sony's case charges over USB-C or on any Qi pad, and Sony's help guide quotes about an hour of music from 5 minutes of charging. A full charge takes about 1.5 hours for the earbuds and about 2 hours for the case. Sony asks only for a USB adapter supplying 0.5A or more, or a computer's USB port, so any phone charger works.
It's the most phone-neutral pick here. Sony's Sound Connect app runs on Android and iPhone, multipoint keeps two devices connected, and the codec list covers SBC, AAC, LDAC and LC3 for LE Audio. Battery is 8 hours with noise cancelling, plus 16 more from the case.
The trade-offs: LDAC cuts battery life to about 5 hours with noise cancelling on, and head-tracked spatial sound and Gemini features are Android-only. The included cable has a USB-A end, which suits a laptop or an old charger; a USB-C-only charger needs a USB-C to USB-C cable (our USB-C vs USB-A explainer covers the difference). This listing is the Black model.

Best for iPhone: Apple AirPods Pro 3

Apple
Apple AirPods Pro 3 (MagSafe Charging Case, USB-C, White)
Apple's noise-cancelling AirPods Pro 3 earbuds with a MagSafe Charging Case that charges over USB-C, MagSafe, Qi-certified pads or an Apple Watch charger.
- 1 port
The AirPods Pro 3 case is the most flexible charger here. Apple says it works with a USB-C connector, a MagSafe charger, an Apple Watch charger or any Qi-certified charger. Five minutes in the case gives around an hour of listening, and battery runs to 8 hours with noise cancelling, or 24 hours with the case. The case also has a speaker and a lanyard loop.
The USB-C angle that matters most for iPhone owners: an iPhone 15 or later can charge the case with a USB-C cable, so one cable covers both. You'll need to supply it, because Apple includes no USB-C cable or power adapter. The port is for charging only; there's no wired audio. One colour, white.
On Android, AirPods Pro 3 work as basic Bluetooth earbuds, and Apple says functionality may be limited. Their settings live in iOS, iPadOS and macOS.

Best for Samsung Galaxy: Samsung Galaxy Buds4 Pro

Samsung
Samsung Galaxy Buds4 Pro (Black)
Samsung's 2026 flagship noise-cancelling earbuds, with a USB-C and wireless-charging case and 24-bit Hi-Fi audio on recent Galaxy phones.
- 1 port
The Buds4 Pro case charges over USB-C or wirelessly. It can also charge from the back of a supported Galaxy phone with Wireless PowerShare. Samsung asks only for a 5V charger rated over 150mA, so any USB charger is enough. No cable or charger comes in the box, and Samsung publishes no quick-charge figure.
The Galaxy link is the reason to choose them. Samsung's SSC-UHQ codec carries 24-bit/96kHz audio, but only to Galaxy S23 to S26 phones, Z Fold5 to 7 and Z Flip5 to 7, and Tab S9 to S11 tablets on One UI 6.1.1 or later. Other Android phones need Android 12 or later, 1.5GB of memory and the Galaxy Wearable app. An iPhone or PC gets plain Bluetooth at 16-bit/44kHz with noise cancelling and Ambient mode, and no app.
It uses Bluetooth 6.1 with LE Audio and Auracast. Battery is 6 hours with noise cancelling, 26 with the case, and the earbuds are IP57. This listing is Black.

Best for Pixel and Android: Google Pixel Buds Pro 2

Google Pixel Buds Pro 2 (Hazel)
Google's premium noise-cancelling earbuds with the Tensor A1 chip and a USB-C, Qi-certified wireless charging case.
- 1 port
Google's spec sheet lists a USB-C charging port and Qi-certified wireless charging on the case. Battery with the case is the longest of the earbuds here: 8 hours with noise cancelling, or 30 hours with the case (12 and 48 with it off). Five minutes in the case gives up to 1.5 hours with noise cancelling off.
Full features need an Android 6.0 or newer phone and a Google Account. Google says they pair with any Bluetooth 4.0 or newer device, including iPhones and laptops, as basic Bluetooth earbuds. Google lists Bluetooth 5.4 but no codecs, so don't expect LDAC. The earbuds are IP54 and the case IPX4. Google lists no cable in the box. This listing is Hazel.

Best headphones for wired USB-C audio: Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen)

Bose
Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen, Black)
Bose's flagship noise-cancelling over-ear headphones with USB-C charging, wired USB-C audio and listening while charging.
- 2.5W charger
- 1 port
The second generation added wired USB-C audio. The port on the left earcup takes 16-bit audio at 44.1 or 48kHz from a phone or computer, and you can keep listening while it charges. That makes these the most flexible pick for long flights or a desk: plug into a USB-C phone, tablet or laptop with the included 39-inch USB-C to USB-C cable and play.
Charging is gentle. Bose lists a 1.8 to 2.5W charger for the fastest charge, 15 minutes gives up to 3 hours, and a full charge takes up to 3 hours for 30 hours of listening. A 3.5mm to 2.5mm cable is also included for analog sources. Snapdragon Sound devices get aptX Adaptive Gaming Mode.
There's no wireless charging, no power adapter and no water-resistance rating. The Bose app on iOS and Android is optional. This listing is Black.

Best for lossless on Apple devices: Apple AirPods Max 2

Apple
Apple AirPods Max 2 (Midnight)
Apple's over-ear noise-cancelling headphones with USB-C charging and wired lossless and ultra-low-latency audio over USB-C.
- 1 port
Apple says AirPods Max 2 play 24-bit, 48kHz lossless audio when connected with the included USB-C cable, along with an ultra-low-latency audio mode. It works with a USB-C iPhone, iPad or Mac. A USB-A Mac needs a USB-C to USB-A cable, which isn't included. Lossless needs iOS or iPadOS 26.4 or later, and Apple doesn't document it for Windows PCs or Android.
Five minutes of charging gives about 1.5 hours, and battery runs to 20 hours with noise cancelling. There's no wireless charging; the USB-C port does it all. This listing is Midnight.

Best open-ear AirPods: Apple AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging Case
Apple describes AirPods 5 as an open-ear design. Both versions charge over USB-C; the Wireless Charging Case version also charges on a Qi charger or an Apple Watch charger (Apple doesn't list MagSafe). Five minutes in the case gives about an hour. Battery is 5 hours with noise cancelling, or 22 with the case. The case has a speaker for Find My, which needs iOS 27 or later.
As with AirPods Pro 3, no cable or power adapter is in the box, and the port is for charging only. White is the only colour.
Chargers and cables that fit
Any USB-C charger is enough. Earbud cases draw very little power, so the charger you already use for your phone works. If you need one, the Anker Nano Charger (30W) fast charges a phone and charges a case at whatever it draws. Our iPhone charger guide covers phone wattage in detail.
Buy a cable if the box has none. Apple, Samsung and Google include no cable with these earbuds. The Anker 240W braided two-pack gives you a 3 ft and a 6 ft USB-C to USB-C cable. For topping up AirPods from an iPhone 15 or later, the keyring-sized Native Union Pocket Cable is enough.
Go wireless at the bedside. The Belkin UltraCharge 2-in-1 pairs a Qi2 25W phone stand with a 5W AirPods pad and ships with its own 45W USB-C power supply.
Still have 3.5mm headphones? On a USB-C iPhone, iPad or Mac, Apple's USB-C to 3.5 mm adapter brings them back. It's also in our stocking stuffers guide.
How we choose
We haven't put these earbuds and headphones on a test bench. Our picks come from research:
- Maker spec sheets. Charging ports, wireless standards, quick-charge figures, battery life, codecs and box contents come from Apple, Samsung, Google, Sony and Bose. Where a maker doesn't publish a figure, such as Samsung's charge time, we say so.
- The USB lens. We check what the USB-C port actually does (charge only, or charge plus audio), which cable is included, and what charger the maker asks for.
- Platform support. Each maker's own list of supported phones and features decides the "best phone match" column.
- Reputation. Every pick is a current model from a major brand with a published support record.
Buying guide
Start with your phone. AirPods are built around iPhone, Galaxy Buds4 Pro around Galaxy, and Pixel Buds Pro 2 around Android. Each works elsewhere as basic Bluetooth. If your household mixes iPhone and Android, the Sony WF-1000XM6 is the safe choice.
Read "USB-C" carefully. On earbuds it means a charging port on the case. If you want to plug in for audio, you need headphones that list USB audio, like the Bose QuietComfort Ultra (2nd Gen) or AirPods Max 2.
Lossless needs a cable. Apple's lossless mode on AirPods Max 2 works only over the wired USB-C connection, and only with lossless source material.
Check wireless charging and the box. Wireless charging is an earbud feature, and AirPods Pro 3 cover the most charger types. If the box has no cable, budget for one. For gift ideas around these, see our budget USB tech gift guide.
Verdict
Get AirPods Pro 3 if you use an iPhone, or the Sony WF-1000XM6 for one pair that works fully with iPhone and Android. Galaxy owners should get the Galaxy Buds4 Pro, and Pixel owners the Pixel Buds Pro 2. For listening over a USB-C cable, the Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) work with phones and computers alike, while AirPods Max 2 add 24-bit lossless on Apple devices. AirPods 5 are the open-ear AirPods with a wireless case.
Frequently asked questions
Can earbuds play music over USB-C?
Not the earbuds in this guide. On every earbud pick, the USB-C port sits on the charging case and only charges it, and music always travels over Bluetooth. Wired USB-C audio is a headphone feature. The Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) accept 16-bit, 44.1 or 48kHz audio over USB-C, and AirPods Max 2 accept 24-bit/48kHz lossless audio over the included USB-C cable.
Do AirPods Pro 3 come with a USB-C cable?
No. Apple says AirPods Pro 3 and AirPods 5 don't include a USB-C charge cable or a power adapter. Any USB-C to USB-C cable and USB-C charger works. An iPhone 15 or later can also charge the case directly over a USB-C cable, and the AirPods Pro 3 case charges on MagSafe, Qi-certified and Apple Watch chargers too.
Is audio over USB-C really lossless?
On the right headphones, yes. Apple says AirPods Max 2 play 24-bit, 48kHz lossless audio over the included USB-C cable on a USB-C iPhone, iPad or Mac, and that it needs iOS or iPadOS 26.4 or later and a wired connection. Bose says its 2nd Gen QuietComfort Ultra Headphones take 16-bit, 44.1 or 48kHz over USB-C. You also need lossless source files or a lossless streaming tier.
Do AirPods work with Android phones?
They pair as ordinary Bluetooth headphones, but Apple says functionality may be limited with non-Apple devices, and AirPods settings are built into Apple's operating systems rather than an Android app. On Android, the Galaxy Buds4 Pro (for Samsung phones), the Pixel Buds Pro 2 (for Pixel and other Android phones) or the Sony WF-1000XM6 (with an app on both platforms) are better matches.
What charger do wireless earbuds need?
Very little power. Samsung asks for a 5V charger rated over 150mA for the Galaxy Buds4 Pro case, and Sony recommends a USB adapter that supplies 0.5A or more. Any USB-C phone charger covers that. A bigger charger is safe, because the case only draws what it needs. Bose lists 1.8 to 2.5W for the QuietComfort Ultra's fastest charging, so even a laptop's USB port works.
