For most people who want a Windows handheld, the ASUS ROG Xbox Ally X is the one to buy. It pairs a 40Gbps USB4 port with a second USB-C port, so it can charge and drive a dock or screen at the same time, and it ships with a 65W charger. If you'll dock often, the Lenovo Legion Go 2 is the better fit, with two USB4 ports, up to 100W charging and support for two external monitors. If you'd rather have SteamOS, the Steam Deck OLED is still the simplest choice, but Valve sells it only through Steam, not on Amazon.
We picked these from ASUS's, Lenovo's, MSI's, Valve's and Nintendo's spec sheets and support pages, through a USB lens: video and charging ports, wattage, storage and fitting accessories. We have not physically handled them.

What separates these handhelds on the USB side
Two ports beat one. The Steam Deck's single USB-C port means charging while using an SSD, monitor or wired controller takes a dock or hub. Every Windows pick here has two USB-C ports, and the Switch 2 has a second one on top.
USB4 and Thunderbolt matter for docks and external GPUs. A 10Gbps port already runs a portable SSD like the Samsung T7 at full speed. 40Gbps earns its place with multi-display docks, USB4 SSDs and GPU enclosures.
Charging ranges from 45W to 100W. Docks take a share too: UGREEN recommends 65W for a Steam Deck and 100W for a ROG Ally or Legion Go on its dock. Above 60W, use a 5A e-marked USB-C cable.
Card slots differ. The Steam Deck takes UHS-I microSD, the ROG Xbox Ally X has a faster UHS-II reader, and the MSI Claw reads faster microSD Express cards. The Switch 2 accepts only microSD Express cards for games.
Best Windows handheld for most people: ASUS ROG Xbox Ally X
The ROG Xbox Ally X is the widely recommended all-rounder among Windows handhelds. ASUS lists one USB4 port (Thunderbolt 4 compliant, with DisplayPort 1.4 and Power Delivery 3.0) and a second 10Gbps USB-C port with DisplayPort and charging, so a charger can use one port while a monitor or SSD uses the other. Inside are AMD's Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme, 24GB of memory, a 1TB SSD and an 80Wh battery, with a 7-inch 1080p 120Hz screen.
ASUS includes a 65W adapter (varies by region). Behind a dock, go bigger: JSAUX says the ROG Ally's 30W Turbo mode needs a 100W charger on its dock. The JSAUX HB0609 lists the ROG Xbox Ally X by name; Anker's handheld dock excludes the ROG Ally X.
Why it stands out: Two USB-C ports, one of them USB4, plus the fastest card reader of the AMD handhelds here.
Watch out for: Only one port is 40Gbps, ASUS publishes no charging rate above its 65W adapter, and the screen is LCD. ASUS has since added the OLED ROG Xbox Ally X20 (7.4-inch, microSD Express).

Best for docking and big-screen play: Lenovo Legion Go 2

Lenovo
Lenovo Legion Go 2 (8.8-inch OLED, Ryzen Z2 Extreme, 32GB, 1TB, 83N0000BUS)
An 8.8-inch OLED Windows 11 handheld gaming PC with detachable controllers, AMD's Ryzen Z2 Extreme, two USB4 ports and a microSD reader.
- 100W charger
- 40 Gbps data
- 8K30 video
Lenovo's PSREF sheet gives the Legion Go 2 the most generous USB setup here: two 40Gbps USB4 ports, both with DisplayPort 2.1 and 65W to 100W USB PD input, plus support for two external monitors and Rapid Charge to 50% in 30 minutes. This configuration pairs the Ryzen Z2 Extreme with 32GB of memory, a 1TB SSD, a 74Wh battery and an 8.8-inch 1920x1200 OLED at 144Hz. The controllers detach for tabletop play.
Lenovo offers a 65W adapter, so a 100W USB-C charger is the upgrade for the fastest charging or docking. The JSAUX HB0609 lists the Legion Go 2.
Why it stands out: Two USB4 ports that both charge, the highest charging input and the biggest screen here.
Watch out for: About 920g with controllers, and the card reader is standard microSD.
Most powerful, with two Thunderbolt 4 ports: MSI Claw 8 EX AI+

MSI
MSI Claw 8 EX AI+ Gaming Handheld (CG3EM-024US, Intel Arc G3 Extreme, 32GB, 1TB, Void Purple)
An 8-inch Windows 11 handheld gaming PC with Intel's Arc G3 Extreme (Panther Lake) chip, two Thunderbolt 4 ports, a microSD Express reader and an 80Wh battery.
- 65W charger
- 40 Gbps data
- DisplayPort video
MSI's Claw 8 EX AI+ runs Intel's Arc G3 Extreme, a Panther Lake chip built for handhelds, and early reviews put it ahead of the AMD-based handhelds here on performance. It has two Thunderbolt 4 ports, both with DisplayPort and Power Delivery 3.0, and a microSD Express reader. MSI's spec sheet adds an 8-inch 1920x1200 120Hz VRR screen, 32GB of memory, a 1TB SSD, an 80Wh battery and Wi-Fi 7.
MSI includes a 65W adapter and recommends a 65W or higher USB PD charger. MSI isn't on every handheld dock's compatibility list, so check before you buy one.
Why it stands out: Two Thunderbolt 4 ports and a microSD Express reader on the fastest chip in the group.
Watch out for: At 785g it's heavier than the ROG Xbox Ally X, standard microSD cards run at ordinary speeds, and Intel's handheld platform has a shorter track record than AMD's.

Best entry-level Windows handheld: Lenovo Legion Go S

Lenovo
Lenovo Legion Go S (8-inch, Ryzen Z2 Go, 16GB, 512GB, Windows 11, Glacier White)
An 8-inch, 120Hz handheld gaming PC with AMD's Ryzen Z2 Go, two USB4 ports that both charge and output video, and a microSD reader.
- 100W charger
- 40 Gbps data
- DisplayPort video
The Legion Go S has the same two-port design as its bigger sibling in a lighter body. Lenovo's PSREF lists two 40Gbps USB4 ports with DisplayPort 1.4 and 65W to 100W USB PD input, plus Super Rapid Charge to 70% in 30 minutes. This listing is the Windows 11 model with the Ryzen Z2 Go, 16GB of memory, 512GB of storage and an 8-inch 1920x1200 120Hz VRR screen, at about 740g. The SteamOS edition (Nebula Nocturne) is sold by Lenovo and Best Buy; we couldn't confirm a Lenovo-sold Amazon listing for it.
Why it stands out: Two USB4 ports and up to 100W charging, the same as the Legion Go 2, in a smaller, lighter handheld.
Watch out for: The Ryzen Z2 Go is an entry-level 4-core chip, the battery is 55.5Wh, and the screen is IPS rather than OLED.
Best for Nintendo games: Nintendo Switch 2

Nintendo
Nintendo's hybrid console with a 7.9-inch 1080p 120Hz screen, two USB-C ports, microSD Express storage and a dock for 4K TV output.
- 60W charger
- 4K video
The Switch 2 doesn't treat USB-C as a general-purpose video port. Nintendo describes the bottom USB-C port for charging and the dock, and the top port for accessories and charging. TV play goes through the included dock, whose HDMI port is rated for 4K at 60fps, or 120fps at 1080p and 1440p, alongside a LAN port and two USB 2.0 ports. System update 23.0.0 (September 2026) added VRR in TV mode, with a dock update.
For TV mode, Nintendo specifies the Switch 2 dock, the Switch 2 AC adapter (rated up to 20V and 3A, or 60W, in Nintendo's EU product data) and an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable. The original Switch adapter will charge a Switch 2, but Nintendo says it can't power TV mode.
Why it stands out: Everything for TV play is in the box, and the second USB-C port lets you charge while an accessory uses the other.
Watch out for: Games need microSD Express cards, the dock's USB ports are USB 2.0, and Steam Deck-style docks usually won't output video.

Best for SteamOS: Valve Steam Deck OLED (sold on Steam)
Valve sells the Steam Deck OLED through Steam rather than as a Valve listing on Amazon, so it has no product card here. It's widely recommended for SteamOS's simplicity. Valve's tech specs list one 10Gbps USB-C port with DisplayPort 1.4 output up to 4K@120Hz or 8K@60Hz, a 45W USB-C PD charger, a UHS-I microSD slot, a 50Wh battery and a 7.4-inch HDR OLED at up to 90Hz, in 512GB and 1TB versions. The 256GB LCD model is discontinued, and OLED stock has been patchy in 2026 amid memory and storage shortages, so check Steam for availability.
The single port is the main limitation: plan on a dock such as the UGREEN Steam Deck dock for TV play and for charging while using USB accessories. Its 4-core Zen 2 chip is also older than the 8-core Z2 Extreme.
Best charger for any handheld: UGREEN Nexode 100W 4-Port

UGREEN
UGREEN Nexode 100W 4-Port USB-C Charger
A 100W GaN wall charger with three USB-C ports and one USB-A port and a foldable plug.
- 100W max output
- 4 ports
One 100W USB-C PD charger covers every PC handheld here. Used alone, a USB-C port delivers up to 100W, matching the Legion Go 2 and Go S's maximum input and the 100W dock makers recommend for the ROG Ally family. The other ports can top up controllers or a phone. For a Switch 2 in TV mode, stick with Nintendo's adapter.
Watch out for: The 100W is shared across the ports, and the full 100W needs a 5A USB-C cable. For more options, see our best USB-C chargers.

Our best Steam Deck docks guide compares HDMI 2.0 and 2.1 docks and their compatibility lists.
On the go, a power bank with a 100W USB-C port keeps a Windows handheld running under load: the UGREEN Nexode 20,000mAh 130W (72Wh) or the Anker Laptop Power Bank (25K, 165W) (90Wh, two built-in 100W cables). For a Steam Deck or Switch 2 top-up, the 30W Anker Nano Power Bank fits a pocket. See our best power banks.
How we choose
We don't physically test products. Our picks come from:
- Official spec sheets. Ports, charging, displays and card readers come from ASUS's spec pages, Lenovo's PSREF sheets, MSI's spec sheet, Nintendo's tech specs and support pages, and Valve's tech specs.
- Standards. USB4, Thunderbolt 4, DisplayPort Alt Mode, USB Power Delivery and the microSD UHS-I, UHS-II and Express formats tell us what each port and slot can do.
- Compatibility notes. Dock makers' lists and Nintendo's TV-mode requirements show which accessories fit.
- Known owner patterns. Common problems are underpowered chargers, single-port handhelds that can't charge and connect at once, the wrong microSD type, and generic docks that won't put a Switch 2 on a TV.
We also match each Amazon listing to the exact model and configuration, skipping bundles and imports.
Buying guide
Pick the platform first. Windows handhelds run Game Pass and every PC launcher. SteamOS (Steam Deck, or the Legion Go S SteamOS edition) is simpler and tuned for Steam. The Switch 2 is for Nintendo's games.
Plan for big screens. The PC handhelds here drive a USB-C portable monitor directly, or a TV through a USB-C dock. See our best portable monitors. For a Switch 2, use Nintendo's dock.
Storage. Buy the microSD type your handheld takes. For a bigger library on a PC handheld, a 10Gbps portable SSD runs at full speed on any of these USB-C ports; our best portable SSDs compares them, and best USB gifts for gamers has more accessory ideas.
External GPUs are a bonus. USB4 and Thunderbolt 4 can connect a GPU enclosure, and ASUS sells XG Mobile graphics for the Ally's USB4 port, but bandwidth is limited compared with a desktop slot.
Verdict
Buy the ASUS ROG Xbox Ally X for the best all-round Windows handheld. Choose the Lenovo Legion Go 2 to dock often or for the biggest screen and 100W charging, the MSI Claw 8 EX AI+ for maximum performance and two Thunderbolt 4 ports, and the Legion Go S for two USB4 ports for less. Nintendo fans should get the Switch 2 and keep it on Nintendo's dock, and SteamOS fans should buy the Steam Deck OLED from Steam when it's in stock. A 100W USB-C charger such as the UGREEN Nexode 100W covers any of the PC handhelds.
Frequently asked questions
What charger does a handheld gaming PC need?
Start with the maker's own figure. Valve ships the Steam Deck OLED with a 45W USB-C PD charger. ASUS and MSI include 65W adapters with the ROG Xbox Ally X and Claw 8 EX AI+, and Lenovo lists 65W to 100W USB PD input for the Legion Go 2 and Go S. A 100W USB-C PD charger covers all of them and leaves headroom for a dock, which keeps some power for itself.
Can I connect a handheld gaming PC to a TV with one USB-C cable?
Usually, yes, except for the Switch 2. The Steam Deck, ROG Xbox Ally X, Legion Go 2, Legion Go S and MSI Claw all output DisplayPort over USB-C, so a USB-C to HDMI cable, a USB-C monitor or a dock works. A single-port Steam Deck can't charge at the same time without a dock or hub. For the Switch 2, Nintendo specifies its own dock, AC adapter and an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable.
Which handheld gaming PCs have USB4 or Thunderbolt?
The Legion Go 2 and Legion Go S each have two 40Gbps USB4 ports. The MSI Claw 8 EX AI+ has two Thunderbolt 4 ports, and the ROG Xbox Ally X has one USB4 port plus a 10Gbps USB-C port. The Steam Deck OLED's single port is 10Gbps USB 3 with DisplayPort 1.4. USB4 and Thunderbolt matter most for multi-display docks, very fast external SSDs and external GPU enclosures.
Can a power bank charge a handheld while I play?
Yes, if its output matches the handheld's charger. A 30W bank tops up a Steam Deck or Switch 2 slowly, but a Windows handheld that ships with a 65W adapter can drain faster under load than 30W refills it. To play while charging, use a bank with a 65W or 100W USB-C port and a 5A cable for 100W. Banks of 100Wh or less can go in carry-on bags without airline approval.
Does the Switch 2 work with regular microSD cards or Steam Deck docks?
Not for games, and usually not for TV output. Nintendo says the Switch 2 is designed exclusively for microSD Express cards and lists standard microSD cards as not compatible. Nintendo's TV-mode instructions call for its own Switch 2 dock and AC adapter, and system update 21.0.0 in November 2025 stopped many third-party docks from outputting video until their makers shipped fixes. Use the dock that comes in the box.
